Biography
Tess Chatfield graduated from the Columbus College of Art & Design where she has achieved her Bachelor of Fine Arts. Currently, working in Denver, CO, and focusing on abstract ceramic forms and non-representational functioning pieces.
Chatfield's art encompasses nostalgia from leaving a place where one felt connected to the land while growing into adulthood, specifically inspired by the American South West and the time spent during her coming-of-age years.

Artist Statement
As an abstract sculptor, I strive to capture the intimate feelings of nostalgia, yearning, and regret in tangible forms. My body of work divulges the impactful memories within my past that have influenced my growth significantly, whether negatively or positively. Extracting emotions that surpass the specificity of my experience helps to soothe the desire to compulsively relive memories, and in turn, create vulnerable yet vague pieces as memory can muddy throughout time.
Central to my artistic exploration is a study of ruminating, and the effect this has over my sculpting in the studio. I find that my process is equally important to the finished work. I encourage meditative energy and repetition in my practice when physically handling the clay. I use ceramic to express my theme through shape and texture. I find clay to have a deeply rich history and culture surrounded by storytelling and holding on to memory. Clay is a medium that has similarities with humans, being an organic material that retains memory in its shape,as well as a historical connection to land, these attributes ground me in the studio to truly immerse myself in the pieces I create.
My pieces are meant to be a reflective work and to connect people through human experiences with lingering feelings, and the desire to process. The sculptures serve as blurred moments in time that anyone can put their own narrative on to further relate with the piece, while the overarching feeling from the work is nostalgia and regret, the viewer can find their own value by reminiscing through their memories.
Using hand-painted floral patterns, chipped or cracked designs, as well as exposing the raw unglazed clay, these techniques antiquate the work and support the past tense expression, as the pieces look worn and dated. The sculptural aspect involves the artist's hands to the point of seeing indents and fingerprints left in the clay, using traditional slab and coil elements allows a deeper attachment to the work as well as ensuring intentionality with the structures. Handbuilding with ceramics allows me to be fully present with the work while focusing on my goal of pouring my obsessive contemplations into the pieces.
